Tulsa Central High School has a rich
history in giving honors to students with high academics.
ROOTS
OF THE NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY
In 1919 the National Association
of Secondary School Principals appointed a committee to make recommendations
on the formation of an organization to encourage scholarship at
the high school level. This committee included Dr. John Masters
of Central HS, Omaha, NE; Dr. Wilson from Girls' High School, Philadelphia,
PA; and Dr. Merle C. Prunty, Principal of Central HS, Tulsa, OK.
The organization was accepted by the NASSP in 1921. Tulsa's National
Honor Society was formed in December 1923. Due to some problems
the organization was disbanded in Tulsa at the end of the 1935-36
school year. The organization was re-established in Tulsa on November
6, 1962, when new members from all the Tulsa high schools were inducted
in Central's south auditorium.
